Well, if you’ve been living under a rock or were jumping over the barriers to dance (per the direction of Alan Jackson) at the Two Step Inn fest, the world economic system is taking a beating, thanks in large part to President Trump’s tariffs. Except for a very few hardliners and union leaders, everyone from farmers to economists sees this as bad news, leading to trillions of lost wealth across the globe and triggering fears of recession and stagflation.
But we’re here to talk about country music. It can be something to soothe our pain, laugh at the absurdity, or have a little bit of fun.
So here are my top country songs for global financial collapse:
Take this Job and Shove It - Johnny Paycheck
Well, if you have one, you might want to keep it, but this banger is always fun to sing, especially as you complete your TPS Reports.
Here for A Good Time - George Strait
So long as you don’t look at the price of soy bean futures, the value of your retirement accounts or the cost of booze, it could be a great time. Hopefully, we’ll not be here for a long time.
All American Made - Margo Price
Taking a very hard turn, here is a much more serious song for our times. We did this to ourselves. So thank those who voted for this eventuality and those who said it didn’t matter and stayed home. Also, trust women and listen to more of their music. And while you’re at it, read
’s writing, too.Makin’ It Work - Tony Kamel
“Makin’ it work, Makin’ it work | Ain’t that the way it work until you’re deep in the dirt | Bustin’ at the seams, preaching to the choir | Don’t look now the world’s on fire | Makin’ it work is gonna have to work around here.” Shit, Tony. A bit on the nose, man.
Good News - Rachel Brooke
Heads up, it’s not really good news. Rachel Brooke’s latest, straightforward album is incredibly dark and sad. It’s perfect for these dark times, which were completely avoidable.
Raven on a Wire - Ellis Bryant
This one is about another man-made calamity: Climate Change! But I love this jam by Nashville-native Ellis Bryant, Northwestern LA’s favorite singing cowboy. The darkness and size of the sound match its storyline perfectly.
American Dreaming - Sierra Ferrell
A sad, somehow hopeful song about the life of a musician in the American landscape. “I’m American Dreaming, but I never seem to get no rest.” This is a love song about more than just that love — somehow Ferrell ties the socio-economics of being an artist into her art without falling victim to the trite tropes of road life. This is an incredible song worthy of all the awards and accolades.
Until next time, keep on listening to great country music.
Good collection but I would add Johnny Cash’s “Busted” from his Blood, Sweat, and Tears album. Some of the references are dated but the themes are eternal
Lovin' this collection of songs! Not loving the current political moment that led to you making this list though lol
